Aled Roberts AM Welcomes Education Minister’s U-turn

Welsh Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson Aled Roberts has welcomed today's announcement that the banding of primary schools is to be delayed until September 2014. The decision comes in the wake of a report published by the Chief Inspector for Education and Training which highlighted a number of weaknesses in the accuracy of primary school assessments.

Commenting, Aled Roberts AM said:

"I very much welcome the fact that the Minister has listened to the views of educationalists and has changed his mind on pressing ahead with the immediate banding of primary schools.

"Today's Written Statement is a sensible move and will make sure that the data used to band the schools in the future will be robust. To go ahead with banding based on flawed assessments would have been detrimental to both schools and individual pupils.

"Between now and 2014 the Welsh Government must continue to work closely with Estyn to identify where changes must be made. It is crucial to the whole improvement agenda that the Minister continues to take advice from professionals within the education system."
